DLF Radio

Task: Redesigning the DLF Radio App to Attract a Younger Audience

The primary objective was to overhaul the DLF Radio App, targeting younger users and emphasizing the unique essence that traditional radio offers—an element often missing in streaming services. The redesign focused on infusing the app with a fresh look and intuitive features to resonate with younger listeners, recognizing that quality radio possesses a soul that streaming services lack.

Radio elements

Traditional radio elements have been integrated.

Sound reactor

The DLF radio logo was implemented as a „sound reactor“ to promote recognition.

Tradition & inn0vation

This concept offers a bridge between a traditional and innovativ interface.

Switch

This switch allows listeners to tune into the different radio instances by turning it, just like in the old days.

Design process

It aims to redefine the radio experience and strengthen the DLF Radio brand. My role during the design process was mainly focused on the areas of DLF Kultur and DLF Radio, as well as the interaction and conception of the UI. I utilized the double diamond method for my design process.

Drag

01. Discover

Exploring a range of influences, from vintage radios to the rebellious aesthetic of punk and rock icons like Debbie Harry of Blondie, provided rich inspiration at the beginning of the project. Pursuing a vintage aesthetic, the selected color scheme and typography reflect this choice.

02. Define

Sarah, a 22-year-old media student, seeks a radio app that combines a curated indie music selection, as she values the soulful connection traditional radio offers, which streaming services lack. She spends her time on social media,  and attending live events, desiring a platform that effortlessly introduces her to new tracks while fostering connections with fellow music enthusiasts.

03. Develop

During the project development phase, typical radio elements were incorporated. Various looks were experimented with. One key concept was integrating the DLF logo as a sound reactor to enhance recognition and interaction.

04. Deliver

As a result, focus was placed on two main control elements reminiscent of traditional radios: the rotary push button, responsible for switching between different subsections, and the top dial, which facilitates switching between various stations. Pattern designs served a decorative purpose and were inspired by speaker patterns.
